prison + tubas

I've just finished a piece for tuba quartet that's based on prison work songs. The quartet here at CU recorded it last week for a publisher, so I now have it on my website. Take a listen and let me know what you think.

Here's the link.

hope everyone's summer is going well. Mine is rolling along quite nicely. I've decided to take everyone's advice and base my tuba quartet on southern prison work songs.
I finally got a job, but it doesn't start until June. I'm going to be an events coordinator for the CU graduate school of banking's summer session. basically, I'll be supervising transportation to and from the airport and various hotels as well as setting up events and managing classroom technology. It should be a lot of fun.

I finally have my personal/professional website up and running. I wanted to get everyone's opinion on the layout and content. I want to use this as a way for people to get info about my music, listen to some excerpts, and easily find contact info if they're interested in commissioning me or buying my music.

Well the semester went out with a whimper. I had to rush to put together my final paper for prog rock. (15 pages about the state fusion in the mid 70's) But I guess most of you who might read this still have another week left so I'll refrain from gloating.

My main reason for this post is to get some feedback on a project I'm currently working on. I've been asked to write a tuba quartet (2 tubas and 2 euphoniums) for the international tuba euphonium conference on June 25. My first inclination is to write some kind of suite of songs or dance pieces. (i.e. Tango, something slow and mysterious, and Funk) Lately though I've been thinking that something based on southern prison or work songs might be a good way to go. Tubas are kind of the working class of the orchestra/band.
I've also been throwing around the idea of writing something in the style of Javanese gamelan or the music of the Baka (pygmy) people of central Africa. (I know... My brain is all over the place) I just want to avoid the standard blah sound of most traditional tuba quartets. The tough part of this project is the 6 min. minimum, the low register, and the limited timbre. (compared to a string quartet or a larger ensemble)

So.

Anyone have any ideas?

Well June and I went to observe the infamous Colorado University 4:20 celebration. It was pretty amazing to see 3,000 college kids crammed onto a soccer field with a haze of smoke billowing from them. I couldn't find a decent vantage point from which to get a clear shot of the whole group, but you get the idea. There seems to be a very different attitude about marijuana here. There were cops stationed all around the field, but since it's legal to possess small amounts, (I think under an ounce) they were just there to make sure things didn't get out of hand and turn into some sort of riot. June and I arrived just as the countdown to 4:20 PM began. Like some day-time new year's party, everyone joined in the countdown and lit up at the same time. 15 min. later, everyone had finished their joints and just sort of wandered away. I've never experienced anything quite like it.
